2021 BJF Annual Report

By 24. April 2022July 27th, 2023News Home

With pleasure and pride, we are sharing with you below our ‘Annual Report 2021‘. Now for the 2nd year, our accounts and processes have been audited by ‘Baker Tilly’.

2021 was full of challenges and achievements. We saw an astonishing increase in attention for biodiversity, with the hosting of the COP26, the release of the Sixth Assessment Report (AR6) of the United Nations (UN) Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the launch of the UN Decade of Restoration, among others.

We are thrilled to share all of our milestones in 2021 with you. Thank you for making them possible!

EXPANDING OUR CORE TEAM AND OPERATIONS

Growing native trees requires many motivated individuals. Therefore in 2021, we focussed on expanding our team in Brazil and in the Netherlands, together with our planting activities in three more municipalities. With the newly expanded Articulation Team, the valuable help of our local field team, and the support from local authorities, we are now operating in Santana do Araguaia, Caseara and Marianópolis.

NATIVE SEEDS FOR RESTORATION

As our planting activities grow, many more native seeds are needed. In 2021, the BJF started building a new nursery and setting up the Araguaia Seed Collection Collective to provide our project with native seeds.

BUILDING OUR NEW NURSERY

The construction of our new nursery started in March 2021, and we are very happy with how it is coming together. Our nursery will make use of the 3,6 hectares of land dedicated to us by the Municipality of Santana do Araguaia to nurture around 500,000 native seedlings per year!

THE ARAGUAIA SEED COLLECTION COLLECTIVE AS A MEANS OF PROVIDING SEEDS

While the main focus of the Araguaia seed Collection Collective is to provide our project with seeds, it also brings further benefits, such as improving local employment. Within the 2021 pilot project, six seed collectors were indirectly employed, demonstrating the potential that this Seed Collection Collective has in boosting local employment in the area. Stay tuned for updates regarding the Araguaia Seed Collection Collective in 2022!

EXCITING NEW AMBASSADORS

We are beyond proud to have Tarsila Ursini on the board as official Ambassador of the Black Jaguar Foundation in Brazil. Tarsila is our first female Brazilian Ambassador and brings with her an impressive career trajectory in sustainability and an astonishing list of achievements. A big thank you to Tarsila for devoting her time and energy to the Araguaia Biodiversity Corridor!

MANY CONTINUED PARTNERSHIPS

Our progress is only possible thanks to our loyal supporters!

We would like to say a special thank you to five partners in particular, who were instrumental to the BJF mission in 2021. The first is  Movida, a publicly traded Brazilian car rental company that is supporting us in planting our first million native trees. The second is the partnership with Royal De Heus, a company committed to making food production more sustainable. Finally, our continued partnerships with the bank EFG Wealth Solutions, TreeLove, and One Tree Planted have also been essential to our operations in 2021 and beyond.

PARTICIPATING IN GLOBAL EVENTS

On the 9th of September, the Black Jaguar Foundation had the opportunity to present our project and ambitions at the IUCN World Congress in Marseille, the largest nature congress in the world. It was an honor to present our work in front of such an inspiring and renowned audience. You can watch our presentation here.

SELECTED FOR BTG’S ACCELERATION PROGRAM

We are incredibly grateful to have been selected for BTG Pactual’s acceleration programme. BTG Pactual is the largest investment bank in Latin America and its programme, BTG Soma, offers over 100 hours of workshops aiming to improve Non-Governmental Organizations’ abilities to fulfil their goals.

INDEPENDENT AUDIT DONE BY BAKERTILLY

The 2021 BJF Annual Report also includes combined, consolidated finances for Black Jaguar Foundation’s branches in Brazil and The Netherlands. These finances are audited by Bakertilly.

The Dutch and Brazilian entities are separate legal entities and administer their finances in two separate systems. Although we are not legally an integrated organisation, we act as such and have therefore decided to present you our combined financial statements.

With new recent challenges in the field in 2022 due to inflation and fence requirements, your continued support remains crucial as ever, this time to complete the growing and maintenance for our first two million trees.

We are thrilled to share all of our achievements in 2021 with you.

Together we can be excited for all that 2022 will bring 😊.
